Bharat Biotech issued a statement on Thursday underlining the safety precautions taken during the development of its COVID-19 vaccine, after concerns about Covishield’s negative effects. The claim comes only days after AstraZeneca confessed in court that their vaccination could “in extremely uncommon cases” induce TTS.
COVID Vaccine Covishield Side Effects
The British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has conceded that its Covid vaccination can produce unusual side effects. In rare situations, Covishield can induce blood clots and a low platelet count, according to court records.
Covishield, produced by AstraZeneca and Oxford University in the global epidemic, was made at the Serum Institute of India and widely distributed throughout the country. AstraZeneca is battling a class action lawsuit in the United Kingdom over allegations that its vaccine caused fatalities and serious disabilities in many cases.
Victims in as many as 51 lawsuits before the UK High Court are demanding damages of up to 100 million pounds. The UK government, which previously protected AstraZeneca from legal action, has yet to interfere in the case.
The makers of the Covishield Covid vaccination, AstraZeneca, have made the startling admission that thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) could be an adverse effect.
What is TTS and What are its symptoms?
Thrombosis with TTS is a rare but serious condition that has been linked to the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, known as Covishield in India. TTS causes a low level of blood platelets (thrombocytopenia) and the production of blood clots (thrombosis) throughout the body. The symptoms that involved in TTS are listed below:
- Severe and persistent headaches that do not improve with over-the-counter painkillers.
- Blurred vision or double vision, may indicate a clot in the brain or eyes.
- Shortness of breath or chest pain, suggesting a possible clot in the lungs or heart.
- Abdominal pain could be a sign of clots in the abdominal organs.
- Swelling, redness, or pain in a limb, indicative of a deep vein thrombosis.
- Tiny blood spots under the skin away from the injection site, or bruising more easily than usual.
- Stomach aches are also included in the symptoms of TTS.
Does Covishield cause the TTS side effect exclusively?
TTS is linked to the Janssen vaccination from Johnson & Johnson in addition to the AstraZeneca vaccine. This connection has been noted by earlier research. The majority of immunizations have common, moderate side effects including transient fever and discomfort.
These effects, though, are fleeting. Most medical specialists think that vaccinations have considerably more advantages than disadvantages.
The World Health Organization (WHO) website states that vaccinations are quite safe. Vaccines can have negative effects just like any other medication. However, symptoms are usually quite mild and temporary, such as a low-grade temperature or an arm soreness. Though incredibly rare, more severe side effects are conceivable.
Would you be worried if you have had the Covishield vaccination?
Yes, to a certain degree. But there’s nothing to be alarmed about. It is noteworthy that the most commonly delivered vaccine in India is Covishield, which is the Indian version of the AstraZeneca vaccine. There aren’t many TTS cases that are reported in India.
Media attention would have been drawn if TTS-related deaths were widespread after immunization. Moreover, it is critical to understand that thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) and vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) are relatively rare adverse effects that are usually observed following the very first vaccination.
AstraZeneca’s vaccine is classified as an adenovirus vector vaccine, and it has demonstrated 60-80% defense against COVID-19 infection in clinical studies. Claims that imply that TTS is a serious threat to all Indians and blame it on government incompetence are blatantly false and deceptive.
According to a 2023 study by Yale Medicine hematologist Robert Bona, MD, TTS usually happens in persons who are immobile, hospitalized, or have severe medical conditions related to inflammation, infection, or malignancy.
How do you respond if you experience uncommon side effects?
While immunizations have been shown to be quite safe and successful in containing the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a very small possibility of extremely rare side effects such as TTS and VITT. To manage such conditions, early recognition and management are essential.
The National Indian Medical Association (IMA) Covid Task Force in Kerala’s Dr. Jayadevan declared, “It’s an uncommon occurrence after certain kinds of vaccines and other reasons.” Furthermore, TTS instances that have been documented typically show symptoms a few weeks after vaccination.
Therefore, it’s wise to exercise caution and see a physician if you’re having TTS symptoms. Minor negative effects after immunization are common but temporary. Rarely do negative consequences get serious.
