United Kingdom households and state pension claimants can receive eight valuable benefits totalling over £3,000 this month. Currently, 12,579,000 people across the UK get state pension payments from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). These payments go weekly to men and women aged 66 and over.

With the cost of living going up, it is important for UK state pensioners to know about the various benefits and support available to them. The DWP has announced a series of valuable benefits for June to help reduce financial burdens and improve the quality of life for pensioners.

These benefits, worth £3,262 in total, include free prescriptions, dental treatments, council tax discounts, and free bus passes. By using these offers, pensioners can lower their expenses and enjoy better financial stability.

DWP Universal Credit £756 annual deductions

Free Prescriptions (£118)

People who receive state pensions are entitled to free NHS prescriptions, which can save them up to £118 every year. Certain groups, such as those with specific medical conditions or those receiving certain benefits, automatically qualify for free prescriptions.

Others have the option to apply for certificates that grant them this entitlement. In addition, certain prescribed items, such as contraceptives and medications given to hospital inpatients, are always free. Pensioners can ask their prescriber for more information to determine if they qualify.

Free Dental Treatment (£282)

Pensioners can save up to £282 annually with free NHS dental services. Those who do not have to pay for NHS dental treatment include individuals under 18, those under 19 and in full-time education, pregnant women, and those who have had a baby in the last 12 months.

Additionally, individuals being treated in an NHS hospital by the hospital dentist are exempt, although they may have to pay for dentures or bridges. Pensioners receiving low-income benefits or who are dependents of someone receiving such benefits are also eligible.

Free TV Licence (£169)

Pensioners aged 75 and over who claim Pension Credit can receive a free TV licence, saving them £169.50 per year. Those who are visually impaired may also be eligible for a discount. A TV licence is required to watch or record live programs on any TV channel, including BBC channels, and to watch BBC programs on iPlayer, whether live or downloaded. This benefit can significantly reduce the financial burden for pensioners who enjoy television.

DWP Universal Credit £470 increase

Council Tax Discount (Up to £2,171)

Low-income pensioners or those claiming benefits may be eligible for a council tax discount of up to 100%, potentially saving them up to £2,171 annually. To qualify, individuals must own or rent a home and be either unemployed or working. The amount of discount received depends on individual circumstances. This substantial reduction in council tax can significantly help lessen the financial pressures faced by pensioners.

Social Tariffs (£234)

Social tariffs provide discounted broadband services to individuals receiving benefits, allowing them to save up to £234 each year. These tariffs are offered by various broadband providers and are significantly more affordable than standard rates.

They help financially vulnerable households secure an internet connection, which is increasingly essential for accessing services and staying connected with family and friends. It’s important to raise awareness about these tariffs, as many eligible households are not taking advantage of this benefit.

Discounted Water Bills (£160)

Pensioners can save up to £160 per year on their water bills through social tariff schemes offered by water suppliers. These programs are designed to help low-income households by reducing or capping water bills.

Many water companies in England and Wales have recently updated their criteria, making it easier for pensioners to qualify for these discounts. This benefit can help pensioners better manage the cost of essential utilities.

Free Insulation and Boiler Grants (Worth Thousands)

“Vulnerable households are eligible to apply for free insulation and boiler grants through the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) initiative. This program aims to reduce energy consumption by enhancing the energy efficiency of homes.

Through improved insulation, pensioners can save between £100 and £450 annually on energy bills. The insulation itself could be valued at up to £12,000, and receiving it for free not only reduces expenses but also enhances the property’s value.”

Free Bus Pass (£128)

Pensioners can get a free bus pass at the state pension age, which allows them to travel for free on buses, tubes, and other transport services within London if they live there. This benefit saves an average of £128 per year, based on the average cost of bus tickets. Free travel helps pensioners stay mobile and connected, improving their quality of life.
