Indian pace bowler Jasprit Jasbirsingh Bumrah was born on 6 December 1993 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. Jasprit Bumrah is one of the greatest bowlers that India ever produced in their cricketing history.

With his unique bowling style, Bumrah made many legendary cricketers stumble in international games. Whether it is an international game or a domestic game, Bumrah single-handedly turned many matches in the favour of his captain with his accurate bowling attack.

On the domestic level, Jasprit Bumrah plays first-class cricket for Gujarat and plays for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. Jasprit is well popular for his fast bowling style and in-swinging vicious yorkers.

He is capable of consistently bowling at 140–145 km per hour (87–90 mph). This not only makes him one of the fastest bowlers in India, but one of the fastest in the world. Apart from bowling at a high speed, Bumrah is also capable of bowling accurate yorkers which even experienced batters find difficult to face.

Bumrah made his domestic debut in the 2012–13 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and also helped his side clinch its maiden title victory. During the 2013–14 season of the Ranji Trophy, Bumrah made his first-class debut in a match against Vidarbha.

Mumbai Indians signed Jasprit Bumrah for the Indian Premier League 2013 while he remained a key player in Mumbai’s all five title-winning campaigns. Following his impressive domestic performance, Bumrah was roped into the international circuit in 2016.

In his white ball debut during India’s tour of Australia in 2016, Bumrah emerged as the highest wicket-taker of the T20I series. He continued his domination throughout the year in the limited over format and became the highest wicket-taker in a calendar year in T20I cricket, with 28 wickets.

His unmatched white ball stats pushed Bumrah into the red-ball format. He made his Test debut in 2018 against South Africa and started to dominate the batters in all three formats.

Apart from bowling, Bumrah also holds the record for scoring the highest number of runs in an over in Test cricket. After Virat Kohli stepped down as Indian captain, Rohit Sharma was promoted to the vacant spot which made Jasprit Bumrah play the vice-captain role for the Indian Test team.

Since December 2023, Bumrah has served as the vice-captain of the Indian Test team and also captained the team once in the absence of Rohit Sharma. Bumrah was one of the key players of the T20 World Cup 2024 winning team.

Bumrah was handed the Player of the Tournament award following India’s clinical victory in the tournament’s final against South Africa. Bumrah ended up as the second-highest wicket-taker for India in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Family

  • Bumrah was born on 6 December 1993 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat to Daljit Bumrah and Jasbir Singh.
  • Bumrah came from an educated family background as his father ran a chemical business, while his mother worked as a school teacher.
  • At the age of five, Bumrah’s father passed away due to hepatitis B then his mother, Daljit raised both Bumrah and his sister Juhika in a middle-class environment in Ahmedabad.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Career

Domestic Career

Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling action which grabbed many positive attention in his cricket career also landed him in struggle during his early days.

Back in 2010, Bumrah attended the Gujarat Cricket Association’s Under-19 district selection trials. However, the selectors did not include him in the main squad due to his unconventional bowling action and instead named him as one of the three reserve players.

As the team won the first three matches all three reserve players were given a chance in the fourth three-day match in which Bumrah shined with seven wickets.

Later in 2012, Bumrah made his T20 debut for Gujarat against Maharashtra in the 2012–13 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Bumrah with his unbelievable spell of 3 for 14 in the final, against Punjab, clinched the title for his team and moreover won the Man of the Match award.

On 18 March 2013, during the match against Mumbai, Bumrah grabbed the attention of John Wright. Former India coach Wright was then the head coach of Mumbai Indians (MI) and scouting for the team at the time invited Bumrah to sign up for MI.

This opened the gates for him to showcase his talent in the Indian Premier League(IPL). Bumrah made his IPL Debut at just 19 years old in a match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru(RCB) at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 4, 2013.

Though MI lost the game by a narrow 2 runs difference Jasprit Bumrah returned with a decent figure of 3 for 32 and impressed everyone.

With his three wickets haul in the match, Bumrah became only the second bowler in the history of the tournament to have bagged three wickets in his debut game.

In the same year, Bumrah made his first-class debut for Gujarat in a match against Vidarbha in October 2013 during the Ranji Trophy 2013–14 and returned with a figure of seven wickets for 89 runs.

Bumrah’s domestic cricket journey which sailed safely so far faced a storm during the 2015–16 Vijay Hazare Trophy. After the first two matches, the umpires called Bumrah for throwing and raised objections about his bowling action.

However, the issue was later resolved when the team management protested against the decision. Gujarat went on to win the trophy with Bumrah’s five-wicket haul in the final against Delhi.

After seven years, on 11 December 2020, Bumrah scored his maiden first-class half-century in a match against Australia A during the India tour of Australia.

India Premier League 

After John Wright inducted Bumrah into the Mumbai Indians camp he remained a part of the team’s five title-winning campaigns in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.

Bumrah made his IPL debut against RCB and returned with a decent mark for three for 32. Bumrah secured his maiden IPL wicket by dismissing Virat Kohli for 24 in a revenge scenario. Kohli struck him for three fours in his first four deliveries of the IPL, but Bumrah managed to dismiss him on the fifth ball and announced his arrival in the IPL in style.

Since his debut, Bumrah continued to play for Mumbai Indians so far. Bumrah was ruled out of the IPL 2023 season owing to a back injury. In his very next season(IPL 2024), Bumrah took his 150th IPL wicket by dismissing Abhishek Porel in the match against DC.

International Career

Bumrah made his ODI debut in January 2016 in the last match of the ODI series against Australia. Bumrah bagged his maiden international wicket by dismissing Steve Smith and finished with a figure of 2 for 40.

In the followed T20I series of the tour, Bumrah made his T20I debut and bagged his maiden T20I wicket by dismissing David Warner and finished with a figure of 3 for 23. India won the series while Bumrah was the highest wicket-taker on either side with six wickets.

Following his back-to-back impressive performances, Bumrah was included in India’s 15-man squad for the 2016 ICC T20 World Cup squad. Bumrah took a wicket in every single match of the tournament except against Bangladesh.

Even in the semi-final clash against West Indies, Bumrah bagged a wicket by dismissing dangerous Chris Gayle while conceding 42 runs at an economy rate of 10.50 per over. After losing the game, India knocked out of the tournament while Bumrah finished the tournament with four wickets at an economy rate of 7.65.

In the two-match T20I series against West Indies in August 2016, Bumrah bagged his 28th wicket of the year and broke Dirk Nannes’s record for most wickets in T20I in a calendar year.

Bumrah who used to perform in every game for India failed to perform in the Champions Trophy 2017. Bumrah went wicketless in the first two matches of the tournament. Bumrah however committed the blunder of his career by bowling a no-ball in the final of the Champions Trophy 2017 that would have resulted in a wicket.

India went on to lose the final against Pakistan while Bumrah finished the tournament as the second leading wicket-taker for India after Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Following a dreadful outing in Champions Trophy 2017, India toured Sri Lanka to play three Test matches, five ODIs and a T20I match. During the tour, Bumrah recorded the most wickets (15) taken by any fast bowler in a bilateral ODI series of five or fewer matches.

In February 2018, Bumrah became the highest-ranked bowler in the ICC Men’s ODI player rankings, along with Afghanistani leg-spinner Rashid Khan.

A couple of years later from his limit-over debut, Bumrah made his red ball debut in 2018 in a match against South Africa at Newlands in Cape Town on 5 January 2018. Soon Bumrah started to dominate the format and bagged his maiden test five-wicket haul in the third match of the series played at Johannesburg.

India lost the series by 2-1 while Bumrah was the second-highest wicket-taker for India behind Mohammed Shami.

Bumrah faced a hurdle in his shining career in the form of injury in 2018. In June 2018, in the first match of India’s tour of Ireland, the right-handed pacer fractured his left thumb while attempting a catch.

Without Bumrah, India won the series by 2-0. The delayed recovery caused him to miss the remainder of the tour. The thumb injury also made Bumrah to miss the first two Test matches of the 2018 Pataudi Trophy.

He made a stunning return in the third test and announced his arrival in style by bagging his second test five-wicket haul. India faced a drastic loss in the series by 4-1 where Bumrah was the fifth leading wicket-taker of the series with 14 wickets from three matches.

Bumrah scripted history during the India Tour of Australia 2018. During the Boxing Day Test, Bumrah registered his career-best figures of 6/33 and became the first Asian bowler to take five-wicket hauls in Australia, England and South Africa in the same calendar year. 

India won the thrilling series by 2-1 while Bumrah finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker with 21 scalps under his belt alongside Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Bumrah concluded the year with 48 wickets and created a new milestone by scoring the maximum wickets as an Indian bowler in his debut year in Test cricket. For his extraordinary performance in the year he was named in both the World Test XI and ODI XI by the ICC.

Right after receiving multiple appreciation for his performances in 2018, Bumrah was included in India’s squad for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019. On July 6, 2019, in the match against Sri Lanka, Bumrah bagged his 100th ODI wicket in his 57th career match and became the second fastest Indian to achieve this feat after Mohammed Shami.

India got knocked out of the tournament after losing to New Zealand in the semi-final. With the defeat, India broke the hearts of millions of fans and returned home with another failure in the ICC event.

As a player, Bumrah made some noticeable achievements in the tournament. He finished the tournament as the leading wicket-taker for India and fifth-highest overall by bagging eighteen wickets in nine matches.

For his eighteen scalps, Bumrah was named in the ‘Team of the Tournament’ by the ICC and ESPNcricinfo.

In August 2019, during the India tour of West Indies 2019, in the first test game, Bumrah took his fourth Test five-wicket haul and ended with a figure of 5/7 in the second innings.

Bumrah also achieved another noticeable record in the followed game. In the second and final Test of the series, Bumrah took a hat-trick and became the third Indian to take a hat-trick in a Test match. 

India whitewashed West Indies 2-0 while Bumrah finished as the highest wicket-taker of the series with 13 wickets.

While he was expected to execute another impressive spell in South Africa’s tour of India in 2019, Bumrah was ruled out of the series due to a stress fracture of the lower back.

For his outstanding performance since his debut, Bumrah was named in the ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Decade for 2011–2020. During the 2020 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah sustained an abdominal strain during the third Test of the series in Sydney and was subsequently ruled out of the fourth and final test of the series.

This is the same match where Bumrah faced racist abuse from the crowd, prompting India to file a formal complaint at the end of day three for which Cricket Australia issued an apology to the Indian team.

Without Bumrah, India won the final test and secured the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. With 11 wickets under his belt, Bumrah finished as the fifth-highest wicket-taker of the series.

After playing 17 overseas Tests, during the England Tour of India 2021, Bumrah played his maiden home Test match in the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in February 2021. Daniel Lawrence was his maiden Test wicket in India.

Notably, Bumrah was part of the Indian team that played the ICC World Test Champions 2021 finals against New Zealand which India lost by eight wickets. Bumrah went wicketless in the most crucial game and failed to assist India in much-needed time.

India’s defeat in the WTC 2021 final doesn’t stop Bumrah from ruling the longest format. During the 2021 India tour of England, Bumrah finished as the highest wicket-taker of the series with 23 wickets and shared the player of the series along with England’s Joe Root.

In the same series, for the first time in his career, Jasprit Bumrah captained the Indian team in the absence of Rohit Sharma who was ruled out due to suffering from COVID-19.

It was the last match of the series, which was postponed to July 2022 due to COVID-19 cases in the Indian camp. Apart from captaining the team, Bumrah also scripted an interesting world record by beating the 18-year-old Test record set by Brian Lara.

Bumrah scored 29 runs in an over bowled by Stuart Broad and created a world record for scoring the most runs in an over in Test cricket. The over also included six extras, meaning it cost a total of 35 runs. Notably, Broad had conceded 6 sixes in an over to Yuvraj Singh in the T20 format back in 2007.

Jasprit Bumrah was named in India’s squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup where India hasn’t had their dream campaign. India was knocked out of the tournament without reaching the semi-finals.

Following the unavailability of KL Rahul, BCCI has named Jasprit Bumrah as the vice-captain of the Indian cricket team for the T20I and Test series against Sri Lanka. Though Bumrah has bagged multiple five wickets hauls outside India, he struggled hard to register the same at home.

Bumrah put an end to the wait by bagging his first five-wicket haul at home during the second match of the series. In April 2022, Bumrah was among the Wisden Five Cricketers of the Year.

Jasprit Bumrah took six wickets for 19 runs in the first ODI match of the 2022 India tour of England and registered India’s best figures against England which is also the third-best figures for India in ODIs.

Following his outstanding performance, Jasprit Bumrah regained the number one spot in the ICC Men’s ODI player rankings, overtaking New Zealand’s Trent Boult.

While Bumrah was expected to drag India to glory in the year’s Asia Cup and T20 World Cup he missed the 2022 Asia Cup in August and the 2022 T20 World Cup in October owing to a back injury.

Due to his back injury, Bumrah missed the home series against Sri Lanka and underwent back surgery in March 2023. After failing to recover on time, Bumrah also missed the 2023 ICC World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023 which India lost by 209 runs.

Bumrah made his comeback in the Indian squad nearly after a year and straight away captained the team in the series against Ireland. Bumrah led India to win the match 2-0 and snatched the Player of the Series award.

After satisfying the selectors’ expectations, Jasprit Bumrah was named in the India squad for Asia Cup 2023. India won the tournament by beating Sri Lanka in the final. In Asia Cup 2023, Bumrah played four matches and took four wickets at an economy rate of 4.17 per over.

Jasprit Bumrah was named in India’s squad for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 played in India. India who remained unbeaten throughout the group stage and semi-final match faced a 6 wickets defeat against Australia in the final at Ahmedabad.

Bumrah finished as the fourth leading wicket-taker of the tournament with 20 wickets.

During England’s tour of India, in the second match played on 3 February 2023, Bumrah became the joint third-fastest (34 matches) Indian bowler and the fastest Indian pacer to take 150 wickets in Test cricket.

He was awarded the Player of the Match award for his 6/45 which is also his third-best bowling figure in Tests. Following his impressive performance, Bumrah crowns the number one position in the ICC Test Players rankings and became the first Indian fast bowler to achieve the feat.

This also made Bumrah to become the first bowler to achieve the number one ranking in all three formats of the game.

Bumrah was part of the Indian team that won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa in Barbados. Jasprit Bumrah finished the tournament with 15 wickets at an economy rate of 4.17 per over which makes him the second-highest wicket-taker for India.

Jasprit Bumrah won the Player of the Tournament for his impressive bowling spell that guided India to lift the trophy after 13 years.
