The Finance Minister emphasized energy security and renewable energy and launched the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in the Union Budget 2024. The government is determined to promote rooftop solar installation in the country. With the increasing electricity bill, this scheme helps you lower your electricity bill and unlock many other benefits. Let’s explore everything about this scheme. 

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

The Modi 2.0 government introduced PM Surya Ghar in the last interim budget session. With this scheme, the central government intends to encourage rooftop solar plant installation in one crore eligible households through subsidies and incentives. The government has kept the budget of ₹ 75,021 crores to implement the scheme, the government will run the scheme till FY 2026-27. 

The National Programme Implementation Agency will execute and implement the scheme on a national level and State Implementation agencies (DISCOM) will look after the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana implementation at the state/UT level. The eligible households under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana will receive free electricity for up to 300 units. 

In the recent Union budget speech, Nirmala Sitharaman mentioned PM Surya Ghar and shared some valuable data about the scheme. According to recent reports, the PM Surya Ghar scheme has achieved 1.28 crore registrations and around 15 lakh applications, which indicates a positive beginning to renewable energy.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana Eligibility 

The candidates who meet the below eligibility requirements can apply for the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana:

  • You must be an Indian national living in India.
  • You have a house with a rooftop suitable for rooftop solar plant installations. 
  • You have a valid electricity connection 
  • You are not already receiving a solar subsidy or benefit

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana Subsidies

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana offers subsidies to the beneficiaries to encourage solar panel installation in the country. According to the scheme guidelines, the subsidies are available for residential households, the resident Welfare Association/ Group Housing Society. 

The beneficiaries can avail the following subsidies under the scheme:

For Residential households:

  • ₹ 30,000 per kW for up to 2kW capacity rooftop solar plant with average monthly consumption of 0-150 units
  • ₹ 18,000 per kW for solar plant capacity over 2 kW but not more than 3 kW with average monthly consumption of 150-300 units

For Housing Society/ Welfare Association:

  • ₹ 18,000 per kW for up to 500 kW capacity ( 3kW per house)

The beneficiaries of the scheme can receive subsidies up to ₹ 78,000  for rooftop solar systems larger than 3 kW with an average monthly consumption of over 300 units.

DISCOM incentives in the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

 As mentioned earlier, the DISCOMS are the state implementing agencies of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The beneficiaries would receive incentives from the DISCOM to generate electricity over the baseline capacity of the plant.

The government has kept ₹ 4950 funds to allocate the GCRT (Grid Connected Rooftop Solar) phase II. DISCOM is responsible for timely inspections, availability of net meters, and the approval of installations. 

Under the scheme, the beneficiaries will be awarded 5% of the cost when they achieve an additional 10% to 15% of capacity and 10% of the cost over 15% of capacity.  The incentives are to motivate people to generate more and save electricity to be awarded with incentives.

How to reduce your electricity bill through PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?

The scheme provides free electricity for up to 300 units to the beneficiaries, which will lower your electricity bill to zero. The beneficiaries can save electricity consumption by following energy-saving practices and keeping their electricity consumption under 300 units. 

The rooftop solar plant will help you generate electricity and increase the solar rooftop plant capacity. The beneficiaries can earn extra income through the DICOM incentives through the scheme. 

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana Application Steps 

Eligible Indian citizens can follow the below steps to apply for the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana through the following steps:

  • First, go to the official PM Surya Ghar website at pmsuryaghar.gov.in/
  • Next, click Apply for Rooftop Solar Plant and go to the Registration section of the portal.
  • Now, enter the state, district, electricity distribution company, and consumer account number to register on the portal.
  • Next, log into the portal with your consumer number and mobile number and access the application form. 
  • Next, fill out the application form and wait for the DISCOM approval. 
  • Once you get the DISCOM approval get the plant installed with registered DISCOM vendors.
  • After the rooftop solar plant installation is complete, you must submit all the details on the plant on the portal and apply for the net meter. 
  • A DISCOM officer will come to inspect the plant and after the clearance, you will receive a commissioning certificate.   
  • Once you receive the certificate, you must submit the bank details with the canceled cheque on the portal and you will receive your applicable subsidy in your bank account within 30 days.

The government has made the rooftop solar plant application easy for all citizens and is determined to reach the annual solar generation goal of 40 GW by 2030.
