The SASSA Child Support Grant is a vital support system provided by the South African government to assist families in need. This financial help ensures that children have access to basic necessities like food, clothing, and healthcare. The grant is available only to primary caregivers, and the child or children under their care must live with them permanently. To qualify for the Child Support Grant, certain criteria must be met by both the caregiver and the child.

The agency has released the yearly schedule for the SASSA Children’s Care Grant, providing caregivers with important dates for financial planning. How Much is the Child Care Grant?

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has recently announced increases in the amounts allocated to various childcare grants. These updates aim to provide better support for caregivers and children. The SASSA Childcare Dependency Grant has been increased to R2,180, with a further rise to R2,190 scheduled for October 2024.

The SASSA Foster Care Grant is now set at R1,180, while the SASSA Child Support Grant has been adjusted to R530.  Additionally, there is a top-up amount of R260, making the total possible support R790 per month per child.

How are the SASSA Grants Paid?

SASSA ensures that the grant reaches caregivers through various methods:

  • Cash Payments: Caregivers can collect cash at designated pay points on specific days.
  • Electronic Deposits: The grant can be directly deposited into the caregiver’s bank or Postbank account, although there may be some bank charges.
  • Institutional Administration: In some cases, an institution will manage and distribute the grant on behalf of the caregiver.

If a caregiver is unable to collect the grant personally, they can authorize someone else to collect it on their behalf by appointing a procurator at the SASSA office or granting power of attorney to the designated person.
