Living with a disability can be challenging, especially when it affects your ability to work and earn a living. Fortunately, the South African government gives SASSA Disability Grant to provide financial help to individuals who are physically or mentally unable to work for an extended period.

The grant has two parts: one is temporary, and the other is permanent. The Permanent Disability Grant is available for individuals whose disability is expected to continue for more than a year. It’s important to note that a “permanent” grant does not mean lifelong support but means that the disability will last for longer than 12 months.

On the other hand, the Temporary Disability Grant is designed for those whose disability is expected to last between six and 12 months. It provides short-term financial assistance during the recovery or adjustment period.

The disability grant is provided monthly to eligible individuals to help support themselves. For June 2024, the grant is scheduled to be distributed on the 5th of June.

Disability Grant Amount and Payment Methods

The maximum amount you can receive through the SASSA Disability Grant is R2,180 per month. This sum is meant to help cover the basic living expenses of those who need it most. There are several ways you can receive your grant. One option is to collect cash at specific pay points on designated days.

Alternatively, the grant can be deposited directly into your bank account, including Postbank accounts. Lastly, for individuals living in private care facilities that are not funded by the state, the grant can be paid directly to these institutions.

However, if someone receiving the grant moves into a care facility that has a contract with the state, their grant is reduced to 25% of the full amount starting from the fourth month. This reduced amount continues until they leave the facility, after which the full grant amount is given back immediately.
